Mississippi River in New Orleans – Walking the City’s Historic Waterfront

The Mississippi River explains a great deal about New Orleans. The city grew around this enormous waterway, and spending time beside it helps put the French Quarter, port and wider region into perspective.

See the river from the city

You do not need an elaborate excursion to experience the Mississippi. Walk toward the river from the French Quarter and spend some time watching ships, ferries and river traffic move past.

The scale becomes much clearer when you are standing beside it.

Take to the water

River cruises and boat experiences are available in New Orleans, including trips that combine sightseeing with music or dining. Offerings and schedules change, so check current operators when planning.

Ride rather than tour

A simple ferry trip can also provide a different perspective on the skyline and river without turning the experience into a full-day attraction.

Slow down

I like the riverfront as a break from the intensity of the French Quarter. Grab a drink, find a place to sit and watch the Mississippi for a while.

New Orleans is famous for food, music and nightlife, but none of those stories can really be separated from the river. Give the Mississippi at least a little time during your visit.
