If Bourbon Street is the New Orleans nightlife address everyone already knows, Frenchmen Street is where I would send someone who says live music matters more than spectacle.
Follow the music
The street and surrounding area are known for music venues, bars and performances. Jazz is a major draw, but what you hear depends on the night and the venue.
Check current listings if there is something specific you want to see. Otherwise, walking around and listening before choosing a room can be more fun.
Make a night of it
Frenchmen is close enough to the French Quarter to combine both areas, but I would avoid trying to visit ten venues in one evening. Find somewhere you like and stay for a set.
Support the musicians
Cover charges, drink minimums and performance arrangements vary. Tip musicians where appropriate and remember that live music is somebody’s work, not simply background noise for tourists.
Go with flexible expectations
Popular nightlife areas evolve, and individual businesses come and go. That is another reason not to build your entire evening around an old list from the internet.
Go for the neighborhood and the music. If you hear something good through an open door, that may be all the planning you need.
