Once you arrive, many of the main tourist attractions can be explored on foot or by using the city’s historic streetcar network.
Flying to New Orleans
Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) is the main airport serving the city.
Located in Kenner, approximately 15 miles west of downtown New Orleans, the airport offers domestic and international flight connections.
From the airport, you can reach central New Orleans by taxi, rideshare service, airport bus or rental car.
The journey to downtown generally takes around 25–40 minutes, depending on traffic.
Travelling by Train
Amtrak operates passenger rail services connecting New Orleans with several major American cities.
New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal is located near the Central Business District and serves both Amtrak trains and intercity buses.
From the station, visitors can continue to their accommodation by taxi, rideshare or local public transportation.
Explore the City by Streetcar
New Orleans is famous for its historic streetcars, which provide an enjoyable way to explore different neighbourhoods.
The St. Charles Avenue line passes through beautiful residential areas, including the Garden District.
Other streetcar routes serve Canal Street, the riverfront and selected neighbourhoods beyond the French Quarter.

Walking Around New Orleans
The French Quarter is compact and particularly enjoyable to explore on foot.
Many attractions, restaurants and music venues are located within a relatively short walking distance of one another.
However, summer temperatures can be high, so bring drinking water and plan regular breaks.
Do You Need a Rental Car?
If you are staying in central New Orleans, a rental car is generally unnecessary.
Walking, streetcars, buses and rideshare services provide convenient transportation options.
However, a car can be useful if you want to explore attractions outside the city or take a longer road trip through Louisiana.
My tip: Stay near the French Quarter, explore the historic centre on foot and take a ride on the St. Charles streetcar to discover the Garden District. Rent a car only if you plan to travel beyond New Orleans.
